Fighting tribal voting rights suit might cost taxpayers $117k
Fighting a request from two Nevada Native American tribes for increased polling access might cost the state and two counties more than $117,000.
The Pyramid Lake and Walker River Paiute tribes won a judgement on Oct. 7 for early polling and Election Day sites on the reservations after being denied by Washoe and Mineral counties and Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske’s office.
The two tribes initially requested satellite voter registration sites, early polling on the reservations and an Election Day site in Nixon. The projected cost for the counties to comply was less than $10,000 total.
Federal Judge Miranda Du found largely in favor of the tribes, granting early polling sites in Nixon and Schurz as well as an Election Day site in Nixon.
