Ex-North Las Vegas city manager requests hearing to contest firing

Former North Las Vegas City Manager Qiong Liu requested a public hearing to contest the City Council’s decision to terminate her employment “for cause” amid allegations that she attempted to give herself a $30,000 retroactive raise.

Liu, who filed the hearing request on Thursday, was not immediately available for comment.

The City Council could uphold its decision or change course during the hearing, which will be held during the March 7 council meeting.

“The City Charter and Open Meeting Law dictate the process afforded to Dr. Liu to explain her reasons for trying to process a retroactive pay raise she knew was not approved by the City Council as required by the City Charter and by law,” city spokeswoman Delen Goldberg said. “The situation is unfortunate, but we will continue to take the proper actions to protect taxpayer dollars and uphold the integrity of our city.”

Along with terminating Liu, the City Council this week also rejected a proposed $613,000 severance package. However, Liu can still cash-out $230,000 in accrued vacation, holiday and sick pay.
