(6,831 posts)in San Francisco, and my territory included Nevada, so I travelled there several times each year. EVERY time I heard some out of stater mangle the name, everyone around me from the State offices in Carson City IMMEDIATELY corrected them in Spanish and English for the respective speakers.
What always surprises me is how many national desk news anchors mangle the names - Nevada and Oregon - you'd think that THEY would know better. I've also heard: Ha VIE ee. And Mizz ur ah. And don't even get me started on the various atrocities committed on New Orleans. It's only NAW lins if you've lived there, which I did for a time, so stop trying to sound like a Ragin' Cajin, unless your name is USArmy General Russell Honore.
I'm sure there are other places that get misprounced badly, too. I know that some of the First Nations hear their Tribal names twisted but they try to help correct them here in WA.
Personally I get lost talking to New Englanders. It's like we're not speaking the same language. It took me years to find out what a "nominal egg" was.
Isn't that where Lass Veegus is?
