Government says Nevada site for plutonium storage is safe

WASHINGTON — Nevada National Security Site officials say a facility housing weapons grade plutonium is safe from earthquake threats that could expose radiation to surrounding populations.

But the officials said the Nevada security site is implementing measures suggested by a federal safety board to comply with concerns about risks from seismic events.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry said earlier this week that the Device Assembly Facility on the Nevada security site, where a half ton of weapons grade plutonium is being stored, is safe.

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board in a report released this month, first reported by the Review-Journal, found the Energy Department had not adequately addressed seismic hazards at the Device Assembly Facility or the potential for a release of radioactive contamination.

The DOE may be the big department but NNSA (National Nuclear Security Agency) runs the show (weapons.) Before they build anything I know there is a giant safety review. The three UC (in the past UC ran these labs) labs: LBNL, LLNL, and LANL have big time safety reviews before and while anything is built. In the past assembly was done in area 3 and area 1 (Mercury, NV) is home base. I never made it to area 51, the gate was locked.....
