Voters in N.H. should expect long lines when polls open on Election Day. Here's why.
The top elections official in New Hampshire is advising voters and poll workers to expect long lines when voting booths open Tuesday morning.
Aside from expecting a record number of voters, Secretary of State David M. Scanlan noted that many inactive voters who had their names removed from the checklist in 2021 are likely to re-register on Election Day, which could lead to congestion.
Under state law, the voter checklist must be purged once every 10 years to remove the names of voters who hadnt cast a ballot within the past four years. (Those who registered since the most recent state general election are considered new and allowed to stay on the list.)
Following the 2020 presidential election, there were 1,119,000 registered voters in New Hampshire. After the 2021 purge, that number fell to 870,000, according to data from the secretary of states office. As of Sept. 30, there were 895,000 registered voters statewide.
