Recount 'worth a shot,' says N.H. incumbent ousted by 7 votes
Juliet L. Smith, a Democratic state representative from Manchester, N.H., came up short in her bid for reelection on Tuesday, though not by much.
Smith lost by just seven votes, or 0.08 percentage points, according to unofficial results published by the New Hampshire Secretary of States Office. She finished third in a four-way contest for two seats representing Hillsborough Countys House District 18.
While several incumbents in the New Hampshire House were unseated Tuesday, as Republicans expanded their majority in the 400-seat chamber, the margin that led to Smiths loss looks to be the narrowest of them all so she has requested a recount.
It was worth a shot, she said.
Today is the deadline, under state law, for candidates to request a recount. Anyone who loses by less than 20 percent is eligible to do so, though candidates who lose by wider margins pay a higher recount fee. (Smiths fee is the minimum: $10.)
