Democrats drop out of Bergen County Assembly race after separate controversies this month
The two embattled Democrats who had planned to run for state Assembly in the 37th District on the ballot with state Senate candidate Gordon Johnson have backed out of the race.
Alexandra Soriano-Taveras, whose call for a boycott of Teaneck businesses last year became a renewed target for controversy this month, and Palisades Park Mayor Christopher Chung, who last week was chided by the state comptroller in a report accusing the borough of fiscal mismanagement by the state comptroller, both said this week they are withdrawing from consideration for Junes Assembly primary.
The withdrawals are another twist in this liberal district's intra-Democratic Party war, ignited when its longtime state senator, Loretta Weinberg, announced she is not seeking reelection in the fall.
The districts two current Assembly members Johnson and Valerie Vanieri-Huttle want to succeed Weinberg and intend to challenge each other for the Democratic nomination in the June primary. That leaves both Assembly spots up for grabs.
