Ex-Mora superintendent arrested, charged with fraud

New Mexico State Police arrested the former superintendent of the Mora Independent School District on Thursday evening for allegedly faking his credentials in order to get high-ranking positions, according to a State Police spokeswoman.

Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo said agents with the NMSP Investigations Bureau arrested Charles Trujillo, 43, in Albuquerque. He is charged with multiple counts of forgery and fraud and was going to be booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center. They had been working with the Public Education Department and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Las Vegas, N.M., to investigate Trujillo.

Armijo said State Police began investigating the former superintendent last October after the PED notified them of discrepancies in his personnel file.

The local newspaper, the Las Vegas Optic, first reported that Trujillo had faked education and work experience requirements on his résumé to get an administrative license. He had served as the assistant superintendent in the Pecos school district before being hired to the $100,000-a-year position of superintendent in Mora in May 2015.
