Details emerge in shooting of Hatch police officer, chase
The man suspected of killing Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop Friday afternoon shot himself in the leg before being taken into custody, and remained in the hospital in El Paso Saturday, a sheriffs spokesperson said during a press conference Saturday afternoon.
Jesse Hanes, 38, of Ohio, and James Nelson, 36, a passenger in the car, were both taken into custody Friday night after a multiple agency response. The two were fugitive suspects in the July killing of 62-year-old Theodore Timmon in Londonderry, Ohio.
When deputies surrounded his vehicle, Hanes exited with what witnesses have told us was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg, Sheriffs spokesperson Kelly Jameson said.
A third person who was originally thought to have been involved was actually a hitchhiker, and is now considered a witness, and not a suspect, Jameson said.
