Hey ma, what's for dinner?

Man unhappy with Christmas meal attacks mother

December 27, 2016 06:38 AM

Albuquerque police arrested a man for allegedly attacking his mother with a 32-inch pick handle over a Christmas Day dispute about food.

APD charged 48-year-old Thomas Haun with false imprisonment and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for the Sunday incident. According to a police report, an officer found the mother with blood splattered on her shirt and legs and a large cut across the back of her left hand.

The victim told police she arrived home from church and tried to cook for Haun, but the police report states Haun began arguing with her over “how he hated what she was making.” The mother told the officer Haun had a history of yelling, cursing and becoming violent with her.

The woman said Haun then struck her with the pick handle on the left arm. According to the criminal complaint, she showed the officer four or five bruises on her left arm and others on the right arm. Some bruises came during other attacks from Haun, the mother told police.

“Due to how he had abused her in the past, and how Thomas stated earlier that he wanted her to die, she thought he was going to kill her,” the police report states.

The mother told police when she opened the front door to leave, Haun then slammed the door and cut the mother’s hand. The police report described Haun slamming the door “like a football player striking another player.” She eventually made her way outside to wait for police, the report states.

Haun left the scene, according to the report, but the mother was not sure when he did.

Police also made contact with a man who had two voicemails from the alleged domestic violence incident. In one voicemail, the victim said Haun tried to hit her, he tried to force her to sit, and she screamed for help.

Police tried to track Haun down, but the mother wanted to return home from the hospital and to make sure Haun was not there. The officer arrived at the resident and found Haun asleep on the couch. He was then apprehended.

Haun denied attacking his mother, the police report states, and said he was fed up with her “being a bad mother.”
