Roman Jimenez resigns as Dona Ana GOP chair in wake of controversial statement

Roman Jimenez resigns as Doña Ana GOP chair in wake of controversial statement

LAS CRUCES - The Republican Party of Doña Ana County announced Tuesday that it has accepted the resignation of its chairman following controversial comments made on the party's Facebook page.

Roman Jimenez was widely condemned for stating on the party's official Facebook page that "violent, leftist protesters" were "getting exactly what they asked for" in the wake of racist rallies in Virginia that turned deadly.

The party announced on its Facebook page Tuesday that Victor Contreras will serve as interim chairman "until the county central committee convenes a meeting to elect a new chairperson."

Doña Ana GOP chairman in hot water over protester remarks

While Democrats and many Republicans across the nation were decrying President Donald Trump for what he didn't say following Saturday's killing of a young woman during the violent white supremacist riots in Charlottesville, Va, the chairman of the Doña County Republican Party caused a stir by what he did say.

As first reported by Las Cruces journalist Heath Haussamen, Chairman Roman Jimenez posted on the county party's Facebook page a message that read:

“These violent, leftist protesters are the brainless robots that are created by evil Soros money. The white ones have been taught to hate their color, the women are taught to hate men, black and minorities want to kill whites and police. They then have the audacity to call conservatives racist. Their own racism, hate and violence has created the divide amongst those that refuse to be bullied on anymore. They’re getting exactly what they asked for. A segregated society of groups that they’ve created and even labeled themselves."

The statement was repudiated by state GOP Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi who tweeted Sunday, "The @NewMexicoGOP fully repudiates Jimenez's statement, which does not reflect the views of the [Republican Party of New Mexico] or the [Republican] Party of Doña Ana County."

If any humor, albeit dark humor, can be found in this situation stemming from tragedy, it's how Jimenez and his county party reacted after the chairman's remarks went viral.
