Several years earlier I attended a summer program at St. Johns's College here in Santa Fe. This was before my marriage ended and I decided to move here.
The way St John's does their teaching is you sit around a large table with a name thing in front of you and address each other formally. I'd be Ms. Oglethorpe. You'd be Mr. Noose. Anyway, there was a Ms. Cooper in the group, and towards the end of the week I was chatting with her after class and she said something about living part of the year in DC. I said, "Why on earth would you live there even part time when you can be here in New Mexico?" She looked a bit abashed and said, "I'm sort of married to a Congressman from New Mexico." Turned out her husband was Tom Udall, then Representative from this part of the state.
In 2008 I was in the process of getting a divorce, had moved to Santa Fe, and did some volunteer work for Tom's first Senate race. I met him and reconnected with Jill a few times. He's very low key, friendly, and always remembered my name, which I find impressive.
Had his father not gone off to DC with JFK, I would have gone to high school with him, because they lived in that school district in Tucson.
Thanks for posting.
