Many people are divided on how the state should move forward with reopening businesses. It's no question that businesses are starting to reopen in New Mexico, but some say it's not happening fast enough. "We've been running at 70% less business than we normally do," said the owner of Filling Philly's, Jim Benvie.
New Mexico State Senate Republicans agree. They sent Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham a letter stating that the governor should lift all mandates under the order in favor of a full opening of New Mexico by 8 a.m., May 21. "We were all being cautious in the beginning of this. Everybody wanted to see what would happen, but it appears as so, the science, the data and everything that's happened does not warrant continuing this to go on," Benvie said.
New Mexico Senate Republicans also stated in their letter to the governor that the COVID-19 virus has not risen to the levels initially thought by many experts and leaders both nationally and statewide. "For the people that are in the vulnerable state, stay home, but for the people that are going to be able to survive this, they need to come back out. They need to shop," Benvie said.
In another letter, the governor responded to New Mexico Senate Republicans stating 'your reckless demand for a full scale reopening, which ignores the plain facts of the crisis and the actions my administration has taken to countenance them, serves only to inflame misinformed public opinion, which is to risk further illness and likely death.'
Phase two of reopening businesses in New Mexico is expected to happen in early June.
