Out-of-state couple's car broken into at Albuquerque hotel

This happens all the time here in Albuquerque and gets posted to the local 'NextDoor' forum. People are SHOCKED that it happens, yet similar car break ins are a common post on local forums.

News story:
A couple was just traveling through Albuquerque when their car was broken into. They stopped at a hotel near the interstate on their way to Colorado.

They got in around midnight and were planning to leave at 6 a.m. so they didn't bother to unload their car. When they woke up the next morning, everything inside was gone.
Including clothes, jewelry and a set of golf clubs; some of those belongings are irreplaceable.

I typically respond folks need to be responsible for themselves and their belongings and then I get accused of "attacking the victim".
I'm told people should be able to leave valuables in their vehicles overnight and have them be there in the morning.

It was INSIDE his garage - apparently they used a device that decodes garage doors.

3. A man I know was SHOCKED when ...

A man I know was shocked when the check book and credit card he'd left in his unlocked car was missing the following morning.

"Who does that !?" he asked.

He'd left them in the cup holder between the two front seats (for easy access).

Might cut him some slack as he's just 22.

4. I guess being raised in a city creates different expectations.

We would never ever have left our belongings in the car overnight when traveling. My friend that lived in Santa Cruz never locked up her house, but I always thought that was totally crazy. It was never a problem for her, but she was lucky to live where she did.

We traveled every year and theft was not an issue. Corrupt policeman and right wing haters at rural places, along with incompetent drivers, and traffic traps are the dangers of traveling, IMO.
