Santa Fe New Mexican editor arrested on DWI charge
The editor of The Santa Fe New Mexican was arrested early Thursday morning on suspicion of drunken driving.
Ray Rivera, 49, who took over the daily newspapers newsroom operations in August 2013, was booked on charges of aggravated DWI, careless driving, lacking proof of registration and insurance, and driving without a drivers license in his possession.
A Santa Fe Police Department report said an officer encountered Rivera sitting in his car on East Alameda Street at Canyon Road with his engine running and a damaged left front tire. The report stated that Rivera was calling someone on his cellphone because he was too drunk to drive after leaving a nearby restaurant where, the officer said Rivera admitted, he had consumed alcoholic beverages.
Rivera, who pleaded not guilty in Magistrate Court at his Thursday arraignment, refused to take a field sobriety test or submit to a breath or blood test, according to a police report. The officer wrote that Rivera had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech.
