Santa Fe police: Hikers discover inert bomb on Rowe Mesa
Two men walking around Rowe Mesa wilderness on Friday afternoon stumbled upon an inert bomb, though they likely had no way of knowing that when they loaded the metal, missile-shaped object into an SUV.
Santa Fe police spokeswoman Lt. Andrea Dobyns said the city department received a call from the men at about 8:30 p.m. Friday after they had driven into Santa Fe from Rowe Mesa, a mountainous area southeast of Pecos and south of Rowe, with the device.
The men were at the Rodeo Road and Old Pecos Trail intersection when they called police about the object. Officers advised them to stop driving and wait at the spot for emergency responders to arrive.
Dobyns said officers didnt think the gunmetal gray explosive, with a tail and fins, was live because it didnt appear to have a blasting cap. Based on a courtesy photo from the Santa Fe Police Department, the metal device had developed orange rust near its base, and it appeared to have caked-on dirt in some places.
