Doņa Ana County workers arrested in check fraud scheme

LAS CRUCES – Four employees of the Doña Ana County clerk and three other people have been arrested in connection with an alleged scheme to cash U.S. Treasury tax refund checks using forged signatures and notarizations obtained at the clerk’s office.

Authorities said the scheme is believed to be one piece of a criminal enterprise involving millions of dollars.

The first of two busts came Friday evening, when sheriff’s deputies arrested four people in Anthony in southern Doña Ana County. One of the four, Maria Ceniceros, works for County Clerk Lynn Ellins.

Those arrests turned up evidence and new information that led to another bust on Monday, according to sheriff’s Detective Ken Roberts, when authorities detained three more low-level employees at the clerk’s office after they arrived to work.
