Federal officer, suspect exchange gunfire near Social Security building in downtown Albuquerque

A gunfight between a federal officer and a suspect broke out near the Social Security building downtown early Thursday morning, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

Neither the officer or the suspect were struck by bullets in the shooting near 5th and Coal, and nobody was injured.

Federal Protective Services spokesman Robert Sperling said the suspect fired at two Federal Protective Services officers around 5:10 a.m. Thursday. One of the officers returned fire.

Federal Protective Services is under Homeland Security, and FPS officers protect most federal buildings, excluding military bases, Sperling said.
