Even as Governor Andrew Cuomo tries to do ever more to please the rightfully restive left, there is always a give and take. He will only go so far. He will invariably invent ways to disappoint.
The latest move was seemingly subtle: Tucked into page 368 of his executive budget proposal is an allocation for Title XX funds, also referred to as the Social Services Block Grant, a capped entitlement program from the federal government. Cuomos proposal states the funds will only be used for childcare services.
That sounds innocuous enough. The problem is that allocating the funds purely for childcare will mean an effective cut to senior services in the city, which have traditionally relied on Title XX money. The Department for the Aging estimates the transfer of funds would amount to a $17 million reduction.
In turn, the city would have to consider cutting 65 senior centers if this version of the budget is passed. Other services could suffer as well, like meals served to the elderly, planned social activities, eviction assistance, and healthcare help.

(725 posts)Have to be killed off. Cutting meals for seniors might be part of their plan. Cuomo can't do anything about it if trump is cutting their federal funding in NYC.

(725 posts)Its such a big state and it went for trump at the election. Its nice to know there are good and intelligent people like yourself who are from there and are democrats and vote democratic.

(116,855 posts)Although my background is in math and chemistry, I did attend a liberal arts university and was also interested in history and social justice. I also worked on tort reform as a statistician and knew people at nearly all of the state agencies so it provided plenty of background as to how underserved the social service problems are in Texas. Throw in some additional life experiences and I can say that I rubbed elbows with those at the top of society along with those at the other end. It lends some humility and some perspective.

There is no subject where I am lukewarm on Cuomo. I either love what he does or I despise it. Gutting elder and child services (including programs started by his father) are when I despise him.
