Gov. Cuomo cites former presidential candidate as inspiration for measure
New York -- In a relatively rare appearance since her Election Day loss in November, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton appeared with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday to hail the passage of tuition-free state college for families with an income less than $125,000 in New York.
The measure passed in the state budget on Sunday is the first of its kind in the nation, and an idea brought to the fore during the Democratic presidential primary by both Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Cuomo said it was an "outrageously ambitious idea, but an irrefutably smart idea." He credited Clinton as "the inspiration for the idea" and called Clinton "our inspiration, and our champion."
"I'll take it, I'll take it," Clinton said, taking the podium at LaGuardia Community College in Queens.
The legislation, and credit from Clinton, could burnish Cuomo's credentials if he runs for president in 2020. Cuomo is a longtime ally of the Clintons, having served as the state's top housing official in former President Bill Clinton's Cabinet.

So ironic that the information age, where so much information is right at everyone's fingertips is also the low information voter age.

(222,433 posts)Coincidentally, I read this editorial in my local paper today which lists the limits that I hadn't known about before. I was hoping this would help my friend who has returned to college in her 40s, made the Dean's List at community college and plans to enter a Master's program next fall. But since she didn't do this in only 4 years - and isn't just out of high school - it appears she doesn't qualify. Bear in mind, I live in a Republican area.
EDITORIAL: Free tuition comes with too many strings attached

(116,855 posts)It certainly forces someone to make a commitment to enroll in college immediately after high school in order to receive the free tuition. It sounds like I would have been eligible, but I would have been classified as a traditional student.
Hopefully as time passes they will be able to expand the program to include those that did not fit the "traditional student" classification. There are plenty of students that take off a year between high school and college. I've found that those people learned as much being outside a school structure than those who remained in it as traditional students.

I actually sent an article about the free public tuition announcement to my friend, just assuming that she'd qualify, but then today I read this. It's been tough for her since she's working two jobs part time, is married and has a young daughter at home, so she's looking for all the help she can get. With a 4.0 at the local community college (which she completed in one year since she started college years ago), she has a number of scholarship offers, but her choice of schools is going to be limited by which one will help her the most. And all the schools are in Albany, so she's saving for a car - her husband needs the one they have to transport himself and the daughter - and it's an hour trip. She's tried taking the bus, but that involves riding for two hours one way and the stopping and starting makes her car sick. I have to give her a lot of credit, I don't think I could have managed all this the first time around!

(12,448 posts)This looks like a great program, and one Hillary has been pushing for. It's indeed an "outrageously ambitious" but "irrefutably smart idea." I'm glad Cuomo shared the credit with Hillary. Both good Democrats!
