Mayor Cites 'Insufficient Funds' After Mount Vernon City Employees Not Paid

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Some men and women employed by the city of Mount Vernon have not gotten paid, and questions have been raised, according to Mayor Richard Thomas.

In a notice sent to city employees on Friday, Thomas cited a payroll error that affected an "unknown number" of workers and said he is “working around the clock to get this resolved.”

“I was just made aware some of our hard working city employees are unable to cash their paychecks,” he stated. “This is a very serious matter that we are investigating and we are questioning why our paychecks from the city of Mount Vernon are coming up with insufficient funds.

“We pay too much in taxes and there (are) too many questions we can’t answer. We are working around the clock to get this resolved. Hardworking families should not have to question if they’re going to get paid.”
