Activists push uniform rent protections across state
ALBANY — With New York's rent-stabilization laws set to expire in 2019, housing activists are pushing for more consistent protections for tenants across the state.
Advocates in New York City have long pushed for the ending of loopholes and incentives for luxury housing developers, but now they are teaming up with upstate tenant groups to push for a comprehensive package of bills strengthening renters' rights.
A relatively new Upstate Downstate Housing Alliance, comprised of tenants and advocates from across the state, marched in New York City Thursday to bring attention to corrupt landlords and to call on Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the state Legislature to enact what they are calling "universal rent control."
Activist are hopeful that the power shift in Albany — Democrats seized control over the state Senate from Republicans in the Nov. 6 election — will prompt legislation enabling upstate municipalities to enact New York City-style rent protections.
