ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The tug-of-war between New York officials and the federal government over hundreds of New York interstate highway tourism signs officially ended Wednesday, the deadline for the state to remove most of the signage or risk losing millions of dollars in transportation funding
The more than 500 I Love NY signs posted along the Thruway system and other highways had been the focus of a yearslong spat between the Federal Highway Administration, which said they were illegal, and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who said they were a key component in boosting the states $100 billion tourism industry.
The federal agency initially said it would withhold $14 million in highway funding from New York if the state didnt remove the signs by the end of the federal fiscal year on Sept. 30. Under an agreement worked out before then, the state had to remove the last four signs in each five-sign grouping by Nov. 21, but could retain the first sign in each group, with modifications.
The four follow-up signs in each group are being repositioned at welcome centers, highway rest areas and Thruway travel plaza across the state, state DOT officials said.
Each group of five signs included a large motherboard followed by four smaller signs, each touting a different sector of the states tourism industry: attractions, history, food and beverages, and outdoor recreation.
The signs cost New York taxpayers more than $8 million to make and install. They began being installed in 2014, despite federal officials warning the Cuomo administration that the signage didnt comply with regulations and posed a potentially dangerous distraction to drivers because they contained too much information.

(2,520 posts)NY could have spent the money better, on things like fixing their bridges and potholes.

(32,825 posts)They're at every turnoff on the freeway. It tells me in an instant if they've got a Petro-can (for the truck) or Timmies (for me).

(222,175 posts)Before every exit there are signs for gas stations and another for restaurants and places to stay - and any particular attractions in that area. They have also rebuilt rest stops in my area, this past summer they tore down and completely rebuilt the one closest to my exit, no idea why now since we get summer visitors.

This is the result of Lady Bird's campaign to beautify the highways by removing commercial signage from berms of the federal highways.
I support this. Although, in this case, maybe a little ridiculous. Highway signs rust out and get replaced. Maybe just not allow their replacement.

(767 posts)I agree that the signs do limit the information to 3 images FOOD, GAS, ETC. TO MUCH INFORMATION COULD BE A DISTRACTION. I wonder why the state and federal governments did not communicate??? I think the republican federals did not like the democratic state peoples IDEA. I am glad advertising signs were limited in the 60's as a road distraction. If I am out in the wilderness i like the idea of signs proving information concerning gas, food, etc. I have driven from state to state and these signs are a big HELP......

After 911 happened I went to NYC and bought a few more to support my favorite city. Leave the signs alone! It's art!
