New York lawmakers poised to be highest paid in country

New York’s elected officials are poised to become the highest paid in the country next year.

With a base pay of $79,500, New York’s state legislators are already the third highest in the country, but they will be jumping to first in a few weeks when their salaries increase to $110,000 a year, based on a recommendation from a compensation committee. The salaries could get to $130,000 in 2021, which would be more than $22,000 higher than the second best paid legislators in the country.

The committee is also calling for the state comptroller and attorney general salaries to reach $220,000 in 2021.

The recommendations for the state legislators, comptroller and attorney general carry the weight of law, unless the state Legislature returns to Albany in a lame duck session to overrule their decisions. Increases after 2019 might be tied to “performance” metrics that the committee will define on Monday.

Also NY is an EXPENSIVE place to live.

Keep in mind that rightwing billionaires are trying to buy politicians. We should make that harder by raising politicians' salaries.

Here in Minnesota it is a job that only pays $45,000 a year, which means you have to have another source of income to live.Admittedly they are only in session part od the time, but I think it keepsmany fromtaking the job.
