Schumer pushes for removal of radioactive material in Lewiston

The time has come for radioactive waste from World War II’s Manhattan Project to be removed from under a concrete and earthen berm at the Niagara Falls Storage Site in Lewiston, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Monday.

But the New York Democrat acknowledged hitches: gaining federal funding and making its removal a priority.

The cleanup is estimated to cost about $490 million over eight to 10 years.
