Workers' Compensation Board employee pleads to defrauding system

ALBANY — A former state Workers' Compensation Board employee admitted on Friday to receiving $10,121.13 in unauthorized workers' compensation benefits.

Luis Torres, 67, formerly of Halfmoon, pleaded guilty in Schenectady City Court to a misdemeanor count of larceny, and agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and make full restitution to the state.

An investigation of the state Offices of the Inspector General determined Torres initially received a reimbursement check in September 2017 for payroll taxes withheld on a single day he was out of work on workers' compensation leave.

He continued to receive reimbursement checks for more than a year because of a state error.
