Is there any enforcement of the mask requirement in NYC?

I went out grocery shopping this morning and saw that about 40% of the people walking on the sidewalks are not wearing a mask.
Some of that 40% are carrying the mask in their hand and some have it pulled down to the chin. They don't put the mask on even when walking past you on the sidewalk.

I walk in the street to avoid these people but sometimes you can't.
Is there any enforcement at all?
I really don't want to go through again what we did in April and May.

Where did you get the idea that exercise is exempt? Sanity Claws Jul 2020 #4

She said the compliance with mask wearing was spotty at best and people were hanging out on the streets in groups, so she stayed home, even having groceries delivered.

Hard to argue one way or the other so they probably think it’s to much trouble to stop every person not wearing a mask on the sidewalk. Just a hunch.

New York City explicitly states that face coverings are not required while walking, running or biking, if you can keep your distance.

Exercise is not a blanket exemption. You have to keep at least six feet away from others. If the others were at least 6 feet away, I wouldn't complain. But they aren't. They are next to me on the sidewalk.

The level of non-compliance has gotten frightening. Combine that with the influx of tourists from hotspots and I see a rise in COVID numbers in about 10-14 days.

New York City police will no longer enforce mask-wearing by the public unless there is "serious danger," Mayor Bill De Blasio announced at a Friday news conference.
