(Bloomberg) -- New York City will require all city workers to get the Covid-19 vaccine by Sept. 13 or submit to weekly tests as cases linked to the Delta variant rise across New York. The city will also institute an indoor mask mandate for unvaccinated municipal workers.
The Delta variant has thrown us a curve ball, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a briefing on Monday. If someone is unvaccinated unfortunately they pose a greater risk.
The citys broad vaccine mandate expands a policy announced last week that requires health care workers in public hospitals and clinics to be vaccinated by Aug. 2 or submit to weekly tests. Foster care, senior center or shelter staff will be required to be vaccinated by Aug. 16, with the mandate applying to the whole city workforce by the first day of public school in mid-September.

About 60% of the citys more than 42,000 public hospital employees have been vaccinated, according to Mitchell Katz, president and chief executive officer of the system. Only 54% of people are fully vaccinated in the city, which missed its goal of fully vaccinating 5 million New Yorkers by the end of June. Just over 4.5 million New Yorkers are fully vaccinated.

(1,999 posts)Born and raised there, haven't been back in almost 20 years! I'm turning 60.
I try to celebrate my birthday at the beach.
Was supposed to go to Florida, but my aunt told me not to come due to the surge there, and my cousin is in the hospital, and they have red tide. Was supposed to go there last year but covid spike cancelled my plans.
So I'm flying direct to Newark, early morning flight on my birthday, brother will pick me up and we'll head to a remote NJ beach for a few hours. Later I'll head into Manhattan for supper and spend 2 days with a friend. Botanic gardens are on the agenda, and probably a walk on Brighton beach boardwalk, and a museum or two. Outside dining. Movies at my friend's house.
Thought about trying to see a show or concert, but not inclined to be in a crowd for that purpose.
The plane and the NYC commuting will be enough of a crowd to make me nervous.
I still and will wear a good quality mask. Happy to provide my vaccination card!
