As candidate faced arrest, attorney postponed State Police call
SARATOGA SPRINGS Both the winner and the loser in the race for city commissioner of accounts have had a rough week since Election Day. One has been arrested, while the other has apologized for his conduct the night the votes were counted.
State Police were prepared to arrest Republican candidate Samantha Guerra the day before last week's election, but her attorney ended up forestalling her arrest on allegations she mishandled campaign petitions: He did not call the troopers until after the votes were in.
"I was with my son, so I did not call them back," Oscar Schreiber said. "I was upset that they knew the dates I was available and wanted me to bring her in on a few hours' notice."
Schreiber said State Police called him on Monday afternoon, asking for Guerra to come into the Malta barracks to be processed on the two misdemeanor charges. The attorney a former Saratoga County public defender said he didn't acknowledge the request until Wednesday, the day after the election, because he said they knew he couldn't come in with her Monday as his son was visiting from New York.
