PORT HENRY, N.Y. (WCAX) - A north country county is battling yet another rabies case.
Essex County announced that a raccoon found dead in a Moriah golf course has tested positive for the virus.
The animal was found on May 17th and the positive results came back on Tuesday, making this the fifth animal to test positive in the county this year.
Experts from the county Department of Health are urging anyone who could have come into contact with the raccoon to reach out in case of possible exposure.

(48,640 posts)If you see a raccoon in the daytime, sometimes wobbling down the middle of the street, it likely has rabies.
Raccoons are nocturnal animals and don't commonly go out in the daytime. Plus they usually scurry in a straight line.
Stay away and keep your pets away.

(34 posts)I stopped to help a 3 year old girl walking down the sidewalk on a busy street with no parents in sight.
She had her dog in tow and after she was safely back with her mother the dog found me of interest and wouldn't leave me alone and I got a nick from a tooth while pushing it away....
Apparently no good deed goes unpunished.
Long story short ( too late ) better safe than sorry, I called local animal control they talked to the owner, they had no proof of vaccination so the dog was put under in house quarantine for 10 days.
I was worried what they would do to the dog, but it was all good in the end though the owner may have been ticketed for the loose dog in violation of local law.
It was still alive after 10 days ( who knew rabies was that quick ) so I was in the clear.
I was shocked that if I needed it, the rabies shots would have been free, but would otherwise cost $35,000 for the first of the series, didn't ask about the rest.
I am in upstate NY, about 75 miles from this case reported above so I'm glad I wasn't aware of that or I would have been more nervous....
Watch out for stray dogs and animals acting abnormally, keep clear and call animal control so they can be put out of their misery since it is an awful and 100% fatal disease that spreads fast among wild populations !
