Greenville County sales tax heads to November ballot
GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. Voters in Greenville County will now have the option of accepting or rejecting a 1% sales tax increase.
Roads and bridges needing repair are the motivation behind Greenville County's newly proposed transportation penny sales tax. Inside county council chambers on Tuesday the measure passed with an 8-4 final vote.
What we've been able to do just with the budget and just without road maintenance has really just been minimal and the need is so much greater the ability to really repair, and fix the bigger needs really can only be accomplished with a single source revenue fund and I think that the penny will really go a very long way," says District 24 Councilwoman Liz Seman.
The tax would charge an extra penny for every dollar spent on purchases, not including groceries, pharmaceuticals, and gasoline, but did receive some pushback from council members.
