Will U.S. cancel funds for NY microchip plants? Trump urges Congress to kill CHIPS Act
The 2022 federal law meant to stoke American microchip making has been a boon for high-tech projects across upstate New York that are set to benefit from its funding.
Most well-known is Micron's plan for a giant manufacturing site outside Syracuse, to be built partly with a promised $4.6 billion through the CHIPS and Science Act. But a string of other funding awards under the law have also landed around New York, supporting everything from semiconductor research to plant construction to workforce training.
Is that funding now in jeopardy under the new administration in Washington?
President Donald Trump threw CHIPS Act supporters for a loop on Tuesday, March 4, by bashing the law during his address to Congress. He urged lawmakers to repeal the law and revoke whatever hasn't been spent, suggesting the U.S. could spur domestic chip-making without government subsidies by saddling imports with tariffs.
