A 36-year-old mother in North Carolina is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly leaving her 8-year-old daughter in a hot car for hours while she went to work at an Amazon fulfillment center, killing the child, authorities said.
Ashlee Rochelle Stallings was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child abuse by willful act causing serious injury, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers with the Freedom Division responded at about 6:30 p.m. on June 26 to an Assist MEDIC call regarding an unresponsive child at a business in the 4100 block of Wilkinson Boulevard.
Once there, first responders found an 8-year-old in critical condition inside of a vehicle. The girl died at a hospital. A crime scene was set up, and detectives collected evidence.

(8,738 posts)is it any part of any curriculum to teach parents or prospective parents about the dangers of over-heating in cars?
I would think this would be a crucial part of any public high school health class. It certainly wasn't when I was in school.
I know it seems like common sense not to leave a child, or a pet, in a buttoned up car during a heat wave, but not everyone is gifted with such common sense.

(2,632 posts)Its not common sense they are lacking. My guess is that this woman felt she had no choice. No place for the child, no money to pay fo summer childcare. We have no social safety net here and tragedy strikes hard.

She will suffer the rest of her life for her mistake, and our society will believe that punishing her will solve the problem.
