Mecklenburg BOE just voted to decrease early voting hours.

We won the last round of court cases on voter ID, etc. so now they are trying to decrease turnout through backdoor means. 150 pro-early voting activists showed up at the board meeting, but the chair, Mary Potter Summa, said she was "not a fan of early voting", and the GOP majority voted to decrease hours, despite the fact that Charlotte is one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the country right now.

Some fun facts about Summa. She was Eagle Forum Homemaker of the Year in 1992, right after Scalia's and Limbaugh's wives! Dunno what their actual names are because they are only identified by their husband's. Weird..... Also WHICH of Limbaugh's wives did they pick? There are more than one, right? But I digress...

So anyway, that is little background about the woman who just wrote her name down on the wrong side of history in Mecklenburg County.

On Wednesday, August 17, at 5 p.m., the Durham County Board of Elections will meet to adopt a 17-day Early Voting plan for the November 2016 General Election. Prompted by the new voting ruling expanding Early Voting by seven additional days, this meeting will determine your final options to vote early and whether the plan will mean longer lines and more confusion on Election Day. The board will decide: (1) whether to retain campus polling locations for staff and students of North Carolina Central University, Duke University and Durham Technical Community College; (2) whether to provide good satellite voting locations that serve underrepresented voters throughout the 17-day Early Voting period, including young voters and voters of color; and (3) whether to adopt evening and weekend hours over the 17-day Early Voting period, including three Saturdays and afternoon hours for at least one Sunday.

We CAN win this. The energy in that room in Charlotte was HUGE. We are diverse, organized and motivated. They know that chaos and dirty tricks are their only hope, so they are throwing another Hail Mary. I don't think it will be enough.

3. This is an affront to the Court

It looks like the Repub response to the Court's ruling is to double down anywhere the Court did not explicitly define. wake County restored the 17 days if early voting but at only one location for the whole county.

Every county Board of Elections has a 2-1 GOP majority.

Because the plan was not approved by all three board members, it needs to go through the state board now. Also looks like a lawsuit has already been filed.

Whatever happens, we just keep fighting. We ARE winning now, after a long stretch of losing. Feels good.
