On Tuesday, June 9, 17 local artists painted an entire Uptown block with three words: Black Lives Matter.
Artists worked all day Tuesday in nearly 90 degree heat to finish the project, which runs along Tryon Street between 3rd and 4th Streets.
Each artist, or artist duo in the case of Arko & Owl, painted a different letter, so each have very different styles and colors. For example, Georgie Nakimas (@gardenofjourney) letter M used similar bold colors and geometric lines youd see in her murals around the city. And in Arko & Owls L youll see similar three-dimensional waves that you can find at Yafo Kitchen in Plaza Midwood and Camp North End.
The street mural was part of a collaboration with the City of Charlotte, Charlotte is Creative, Brand The Moth, BLKMRKTCLT, and the artists. The entire project from idea to completion took only a few days.
Participating artists: Dammit Wesley, Dakotah Aiyanna, Matthew Clayburn, Abel Jackson, Garrison Gist, Owl & Arko, Kyle Mosher, Franklin Kernes, Kiana Mui, Marcus Kiser, Georgie Nakima, Zach McLean, Frankie Zombie, CHD:WCK!, John Hairston, and Dari Calamari. Artists are being paid $500 for each letter, and all supplies were included.

My normal bus route going home passes by that section of Tryon Street. It's as if the creative community, which is not sizable but significant, is channeling their Asheville type of vibe. Then again during the Final Four in 1994, that part of Tryon was remade into an entertainment district. Something that was revolutionary at the time as the streets rolled up after 5 pm.
