Judge denies request for more time for North Dakota redistricting

An appeals court on Friday denied North Dakota’s request for more time to comply with a judge’s order to redraw legislative districts to ensure fair representation for two tribes.

Without the extension, it appears unlikely that the Legislature will meet the court’s deadline to approve new district maps.

Sen. Ron Sorvaag, R-Fargo, is chairman of the Redistricting Committee tasked with meeting the court order to redraw district lines that would not dilute the voting power of Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the Spirit Lake Nation.

“We’re moving as quickly as we can,” Sorvaag said in an interview Friday.

Translate: We're dragging it out as far as possible so we can claim that we can't possibly be ready for the 24 election and need to use the unconstitutional maps.
