North Dakota breaks oil production records, and flaring limits

North Dakota shattered its previous record oil production of 1.23 million barrels per day in December of 2014 sooner than it had expected to, but the silver cloud came with a black lining.

The state also failed to meet its flaring limits, bleeding 17 percent of its produced gas instead of meeting the target, 15 percent.

Oil production for May hit 1.244 million barrels per day, almost 17,000 more barrels per day than the previous high.

Gas production also hit an all-time new high at 2.318 MCF per day.

Helms said the biggest contributing factor to excess flaring was downtime during most of May at the Robinson Lake Gas Plant in Mountrail County.
