Jobless benefits, tax levels targeted by Ohio legislators

COLUMBUS — The Unemployment Compensation Reform Joint Committee held the first of five hearings last week to tackle a problem that has eluded state leaders for at least two decades.

The solution lies in a long-debated balance between benefits provided to jobless workers and taxes paid by employers that fund the system.

Republican legislative leaders say they hope to pass a bill when the legislature returns after the Nov. 8 election.

The proposal would have cut millions in employer taxes while slashing weekly benefits paid to workers by more than half to as little as 12 weeks.
