Senator Al Franken appears in Toledo for Clinton

U.S. Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat and former comedic actor, blasted Donald Trump on Friday as the candidate who “appeals to the worst of us as an American people” in stops in Toledo and Sylvania to stump for Hillary Clinton.

“In his first announcement speech, he said Mexico is sending here their rapists and drug-dealers, that is one, not true, and two, it is appealing to the worst in us,” Mr. Franken said after addressing volunteers at the Clinton campaign headquarters in downtown Toledo.

“He’s depicted inner cities and big cities as just hell on Earth and we know that great things happen in inner cities. There are difficulties, of course,” he said. “He has made fun of people with disabilities, he has talked about sexually assaulting women in really offensive terms, and on and on.”

The comment was parallel to Mrs. Clinton’s now well-known statement when she said Mr. Trump’s supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables.” Since then, Mr. Trump’s supporters have embraced it on T-shirts and posters with statements like “proud member of the basket of deplorables.”

Several years ago Al had a program on Air America. I listened to it frequently and he came across as politically astute and a man who is up on all the issues. He knows what he is talking about.
