'Handmaid's Tale' author Margaret Atwood speaks at Mount Union

CANTON Margaret Atwood mixed dystopian future with wry humor during her 2019 Schooler Lecture at the University of Mount Union.

The Canadian author on Wednesday drew parallels to Mount Union’s Methodist affiliation and her upbringing. She then evoked laughter while discussing “The Handmaid’s Tale” — a 1985 novel adapted into a Hulu series she described as a “blistering success” — and the “Oryx and Crake” trilogy — a near-apocalyptic fiction about “the end of the human race.”

Atwood assured the packed auditorium that neither bleak fiction would become reality, “at least not next week.”

The award-winning author has had a decades-long career that includes more than 50 volumes of poetry, children’s literature and novels, such as “The Edible Woman” and “The Blind Assassin.”
