Former MetroHealth executive sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for racketeering
AKRON, Ohio The former chief operating officer of The MetroHealth System was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years, eight months in federal prison, cementing a fall for a once-powerful Northeast Ohio executive who used his clout to take thousands of dollars in bribes and illegally use hospital resources for his side company.
Dr. Edward Hills was well-respected and well paid for his work at the Cuyahoga County hospital, U.S. District Judge Sarai Lioi said. He came from a good family and received a great education, Lioi said.
Yet he traded it all because of his greed, the judge said.
Hills, 58, and former MetroHealth dentists Sari Alqsous, Yazan Al-Madani and Tariq Sayegh were found guilty in July of dozens of charges, including racketeering, mail fraud, bribery, receipt of kickbacks and obstruction of justice. Hills was also convicted of tax charges.
