Monument to late Toledo reverend, civil-rights activist restored
William Liddell is now a much happier man than he has been for at least 10 months.
His mission to see a monument to his late friend, the Rev. Johnny Lee McCloud, restored to its rightful place is finally over. The memorial had been inexplicably moved an unknown time ago from its site near the McCloud Memorial Bridge and garden along City Park Avenue over Swan Creek to a different spot near the pool at Smith Park.
Late last month, the city poured new concrete and reset the large engraved rock and accompanying commemorative bricks. Crews also cleared the South Toledo site of a lot of overgrown brush, and mulched around the memorial.
They did it right. Now, please dont ever move it, Mr. Liddell, 91, said jokingly. Even if Im dead and gone, just leave it there like its supposed to be.
