For one thing, they are not "the" only state university in Ohio. They are also not the oldest state university in Ohio.

The university since the mid 1990s/early 2000s has been marketing itself as THE Ohio State University.
If you listen to sports broadcasts w/OSU in them, the announcers do stress the word The. By trademarking the word on sports gear, OSU gets more money in its coffers.
