In Ohio Supreme Court races, Democrats hold edge in campaign cash over GOP

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Democratic candidates running for the Ohio Supreme Court have all raised more than their Republican challengers this past quarter in the runup to an election where three of seven seats are up for grabs.

In two of the three races, the Democratic candidates spent more than their Republican rival this quarter, new filings show. In two of three they also have more money on hand as well.

Republicans currently maintain a 4-3 advantage on the court. The results Nov. 5 could expand it to 6-1 or swing it to the Democrats. While Republicans have dominated statewide, congressional and legislative races in Ohio, Democrats managed to win seats in the ostensibly nonpartisan court races in 2018 and 2020. In 2022 – after statehouse Republicans created a new requirement that ballots disclose judges’ party affiliations – Republicans swept all three races that cycle.

However, Republicans' sweep came after they trounced Democrats fundraising at this point in 2022.
