Former state senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate talks revenue woes, criminal justice reform
ADA, Okla. — Former state senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Connie Johnson said it’s time to take a new approach to solving some old problems facing the state of Oklahoma.
Johnson sat down with The Ada News Tuesday to discuss a few topics she said she feels will be important to voters in the 2018 Governor’s race. One is the need to raise the state’s gross production tax to a level more in line with other states where oil and natural gas drilling is an important economic driver.
Johnson described the state’s current fiscal condition as a conundrum, saying the state’s gross production tax needs to be restored to pre-2014 levels.
“At a minimum, put (the gross production tax) back to where it was, because even if we put it back to where it was, it’s still less than the regional average,” Johnson said. “So, definitely put it back to where it was, at a minimum.”
