California man who attempted to jump across Devil's Churn on Oregon Coast presumed dead


A California man who attempted to jump across a wide cove of frothing water on Thursday at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area off the Oregon coast is presumed deceased, according to state police.

Steve Allen, 67, of Walnut Creek, Calif., apparently tried to hurdle Devil's Churn, a narrow boiling inlet just off Highway 101 south of Yachats, over 50 miles northwest of Eugene.

"Troopers and emergency personnel responded for a subject who had fallen into the ocean at Devils Churn," Oregon State Police said in a news release. "Fellow visitors attempted to rescue Allen but were unable to retrieve him from the water."

Witnesses told local news outlet Yachats News Allen appeared to have "missed his footing" when attempting to cross. People attempted to save him by creating a makeshift line and raft. Allen was able to hold onto it, but could not get pulled in as he had a “pretty big” head injury.

The Devil’s Churn is treacherous even on a calm day and there’s very little margin for error near the edge. No matter how many warning signs you post you’ll always have the fate tempters.

Most people’s depth perception will kick in their survival instincts before such an idea comes to fruition.

The ocean is SO unforgiving at Cape Perpetua. My sister and I almost learned the hard way on our first visit when a sneaker wave came up a narrow gully in the volcanic rock and completely dowsed us down to our skivvies. Just a few feet closer to the edge and we’d have been swept out to sea.

It is a wildly beautiful and dramatic place and I’ve left instructions to have some of my ashes spread there. Mr. Allen of Walnut Creek just skipped the cremation part.

7. Some people don't realize how dangerous the water can be

The oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds are fundamentally alien environments for humans. After all, we breathe air and walk erect on land and evolution has prepared us for a land existence. Even people who are very good swimmers can quickly lose control in a rip tide or swift current.

I've spent a great part of my life messing around with boats and life on the water. The waters still fill me with anxiety and caution. One must always be extra careful around water.

This story is a tragedy. One man lost his life and the folks who tried to save him will have a shadow over them for the rest of their lives.

I wouldn't go anywhere near this dangerous shore.
