Democrat Dan Rayfield has a five point lead over Republican Will Lathrop for Oregon Attorney General, NPI poll finds
This year, voters in the Beaver State will be tasked with choosing a new Attorney General, after incumbent Ellen Rosenblum decided against seeking a fourth term. NPI’s autumn survey of the Oregon electorate suggests that former Speaker Dan Rayfield, a member of the House of Representatives, is the favorite in the race to succeed Rosenblum, with a five point advantage over his Republican rival Will Lathrop.
Asked about their voting intention, 46% of 716 likely Oregon voters surveyed last week by Public Policy Polling for the Northwest Progressive Institute said they’d be voting for Rayfield, while 41% said they’d be voting for Republican Will Lathrop. 13% were not sure.
Attorney General is one of several independently elected positions in Oregon’s executive department, along with Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Labor Commissioner. Regular elections for Attorney General and Treasurer are regularly held in presidential years; the other positions are filled in midterm years.
It has been sixteen years since voters in Oregon last faced a contest for AG with no incumbent. Ellen Rosenblum was appointed to serve as Attorney General in mid-2012 when John Kroger resigned to become President of Reed College; she was retained by voters later that year, earning earned 56.17% of the vote in a a four-way contest. Republican James Buchal — who qualified for the November ballot after receiving sufficient write-in votes in the primary — placed second, earning 39.14% of the vote.
