Food stamp change would harm PA working families, state says

A proposed Trump administration rule change would mean as many as 200,000 fewer Pennsylvanians would receive food assistance, state officials said Monday.

“We strongly oppose any and all attacks on SNAP and will continue to fight against any attempt to take the program away from Pennsylvanians who need it,” said Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Teresa Miller on Monday, referring to the program by its formal acronym.

About 1.8 million Pennsylvanians receive food assistance from the program. It would also jeopardize the free school lunch many low income students receive.

More than 3 million Americans receiving food assistance would lose benefits by the change, the federal government estimates.
