PENNSYLVANIA Authorities in Washington, D.C. announced arrests made in connection with the siege on the United States Capitol building that occurred Wednesday as Congress convened to certify the presidential election results. Among those arrested were more than a dozen Pennsylvania residents.
Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia Thursday announced hundreds of arrests tied to Wednesday's event, in which supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an effort to block president-elect Joe Biden's victory in the general election. Among the numerous arrests were 14 Pennsylvanians.
(snip - list of names/ages)
Others have been charged with crimes including assault on police, resisting arrest, rioting, burglary, threatening to kidnap or cause injury, defacing public property, firearms crimes, and more. See the full list of arrests and charges here (PDF).
Police in Washington, D.C. are asking for the public's help identifying others who were involved in Wednesday's events and released a list of those sought. Additionally, a Pennsylvania man was among four people who died during the chaos. Benjamin Phillips, 50, of Ringtown in Schuylkill County, died of an unspecified "medical emergency," according to Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III.

(3,456 posts)First, the fact that so many of these are felony charges is great. Second, the vast majority of these folks live close to the DC area. So it is not like tens of thousands were willing to get on a plane and go support Donnie. I do realize nationally too many may have been there still in spirit but this was just the local Trump rabble by and large. And yes, many like in my state of WA went to their local state capital to make trouble but not in huge numbers. I think if future demonstrations that want to turn violent are met by adequate police counterforce AND ARRESTS where appropriate, this will be the swan song for Trumps chumps. This needs to be especially true around the Inauguration.

So there were apparently hundreds arrested that are obviously not being reported by the MSM. That seems more typical of what happens at events like that (here in Philly they had arrested several hundred a day during the more "intense" protests over the summer).

(3,456 posts)And I am fine if they spend more time making arrests than worrying about keeping the media up to date on numbers. Lock them up!

(142,277 posts)This particular file is from the D.C. Metro police. There were apparently other arrests made by other LEO (federal - e.g., Capitol Police, and possibly others like the Secret Service, NPS, ATF, etc) in the area.
Almost every article I stumble upon now have started listing assorted names of people who have been charged with federal crimes vs local D.C. statue crimes. Have been trying to find the last article I saw but it indicated that some decisions were being made about who would charge for what and how due to there apparently being more serious consequences for federal vs municipal. One of the articles I saw was this -
The Justice Department announced charges against 13 people Friday in connection with the deadly Pro-Trump riots at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday.

Thirteen people have been charged in federal court so far for crimes related to the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, including a man who is accused of having 11 Molotov cocktails and two firearms, the Justice Department said Friday. Another 40 people have been arrested and charged in D.C. Superior Court.

"The lawless destruction of the U.S. Capitol building was an attack against one of our Nation's greatest institutions," acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin said in a statement. "My Office, along with our law enforcement partners at all levels, have been expeditiously working and leveraging every resource to identify, arrest, and begin prosecuting these individuals who took part in the brazen criminal acts at the U.S. Capitol."

Capitol Police initially announced 14 related arrests Thursday morning, and D.C. police said they had arrested nearly 70 people in the wake of the violence, many for violating curfew. Law enforcement have made more arrests since then.

So they have been assessing what people were doing and divvying out "who" will do the charging. There were piles of people "protesting" outside on the street (not on the Capitol grounds) and many were still out there past curfew so they got arrested by the D.C. Metro police. But a number who bashed their way inside and and started swinging from the Senate galley or were bursting into the Parliamentarian's Office and trashing it, were most likely those who got or would get the "federal treatment".

(10,026 posts)after what they did, as it appeared when they were almost politely invited to leave the Capitol building they'd invaded. It's almost better if they, too, thought they were just going to have bragging rights and face not a consequence, only to find they were wrong.
As for the fed charges, though, won't iDJT just blanket pardon them? I mean, I'm sure he normally demands big bucks for those pardons, but he might just do a freebie for these, his most devoted worshippers.

(142,277 posts)as much as I know people are assuming that something like that might be done, there is actually a process and paperwork that is filed for legal purposes, which obviously would include the individual's name/address/criminal situation and other info in order to carry out the power. I.e., there are options for legal adjudication of crimes that include a "commutation" (which keeps the charges in place but commutes any prison sentence) or the "full pardon", that would expunge the record and throw out any prison sentences.
He could cherry-pick people out of those masses who were arrested/charged and consider them for either option (and those interested usually have some advocate who will submit a formal request), but administratively, a hand-waved "mass pardon" wouldn't work.
If I recall correctly President Obama,, just before he left office, had pardoned something like 300 people who had been charged and imprisoned for certain offenses related to drug use/possession that were a result of the disparate application/impact of the law on minority communities (e.g., related to drugs like crack cocaine that resulted in longer sentences than powder cocaine, etc).

(3,612 posts)to all those who evaded the Vietnam draft. It could be possible. The optics would be bad in most folks minds. Charges on the state and local level would have to be pursued in event the orange stain went that route.
Personally, I would think the current occupant of the White House wouldn't do that. But I also didn't think he'd really try and do what he did on Wednesday either.
BumRushDaShow
(142,277 posts)Something like that would only apply to those charged with federal offenses.
IMHO, whether he would do it or not will depend on whether he considered their attempt a "failure" since the ultimate goal was not achieved ("losers" ) or whether doing so would make him the "benevolent despot" and be used as a "reward" for the attempt.

(35,666 posts)A lot of them are Curfew violations, but several are more serious, such as Riot act-felony, Theft, Carrying a concealed weapon, etc. I don't know anyone who was in Washington on Wednesday, so I don't have any specific names to look for on here.
You can download the entire list as a PDF document from the link in the OP.

(142,277 posts)They are not reporting this in the MSM. That is more like what you see happen at large protests that get unruly, where in this case, they did their stuff on federal property and THAT is a whole other level of bad.
When they kettled the crowds still out there away from the Capitol building, the "media" (at least the national media) stopped showing them as if they left and went home... and they instead focused on what was still going on in the Capitol. But meanwhile, the police apparently started arresting people about 2 hours after the curfew went into effect (according to one blip I saw about arrests) .

(2,613 posts)The most telling thing about this list are the charges. Anti Trump/BLM protests - throwing rocks. MAGA Fucks- unregistered firearms and ammo with illegal large capacity magazines and multiple assaults on officers. It's really easy to see who is "violent".

(10,026 posts)As with everything, the RWers get their way with force and intimidation. Dems have got to organize not just for elections, but to get the truth out there all the time. I don't know how we do it, but we have to counter RW propaganda in all its forms. People's opinions are formed by seemingly innocent input like tv shows (where the belligerently ignorant racist Archie Bunker is still lovable), and "trustworthy" local new (tainted by Sinclair), etc.
This coup attempt is going to be normalized right soon if things go on as they had before, and as much as I'd like to think something has changed in response, I'm not at all sure it has.
