Three members of East Lampeter Townships board of supervisors suddenly resigned from their positions this week after expressing disgust over violent rioting at the U.S. Capitol that caused death and destruction.
Chairman Corey Meyer, Vice-Chairman John Blowers, and member of the board Ethan Demme announced their departure from the GOP in a letter posted on Twitter and sent to Kirk Radanovic, head of Lancaster Countys Republican Committee.
For decades we have worked within the Republican Party to advocate for conservative ideals like limited government, fiscal responsibility and the rule of law, the letter said. We have knocked on doors, donated to candidates and run for office. Since 2016 we have voiced our concerns as the Republican Party has become the party of Donald Trump.
The supervisors specifically mentioned the 2020 election, and their frustration with conservatives continued denial of its results.
The denial of the 2020 election results by members of our party and elected officials in Lancaster County is outrageous, the letter said. Our neighbors voted, those votes became the certified election results and were upheld by our judicial system. Continuing to deny these facts has damaged our system of government and has fomented the seeds of sedition, resulting in violence in our nations capital.

Enough is enough and such behavior cannot be excused or ignored, the men said in the letter. The Republican Party we once knew is gone and has left us behind.

(3,611 posts)But Lancaster County is what I would consider more "Main Line" Republican today. Unfortunately, there are a lot of parts of this state that are literally dying (shrinking/aging population). The only real commercially viable areas in my opinion are, for the most part, the counties south and east of I-81/I-78. The rest of the state, except maybe for some counties around Pittsburgh and Penn State are probably on the take.

(3,611 posts)Was Independent originally. Registered Democratic to vote for Paul Tsongas in 92. Stayed Democratic when I left college and got married. But it was hopeless being a Democrat in Chester County back in the early 1990s so we switched to Republican then moved the next county over when we bought a house.
Am more of an old-school NE Republican. I think the party really lost someone when John Heinz died in a helicopter crash in 91. Soon after the Republican party purged Specter. I guess I'd put Thornburg in the mix of what I considered moderate Republicans. Maybe Tom Ridge falls in as the last moderate Republican in this state but I think he leaned anti-abortion.
You can trace the rise of Rush Limbaugh to the decline of the business wing that used to define the Republican party. I tend to be more conservative on economics. I don't think it's a good idea for government to design and run things. For no other reason than I know people are imperfect and putting too much trust and power in them can be dangerous and/or disappointing. I think things need to evolve more organically. People can figure things out if you give them the proper tools, guidance and encouragement. Give a man a fish versus teach a man to fish.

(3,611 posts)We've never really had star power in Philly other than Lindros. The Legion of Doom was a lot of fun to watch in the 90s. We could have beat the wings in 95 if we had a goalie who could have stopped a beach ball in the finals. Should have had another cup in the 80s but our goalie wrecked his car after a drinking party. Hextal was unbelievable in the Oilers final but as they say, Jesus saves, but Gretzky scores on the rebound. There's also the infamous off-sides in the finals against the Islanders. We always seem to suffer tragedy with our sports teams. So much so most of us just expect the wheels to fall off at any second.
Appreciate what you have out there. The Pens and Steelers have better management than our side of the state. Is Rutherford still your manager? I remember watching him in goal when I was a kid in Livonia. He played a very unorthodox style; was of the mindset that a save with any part of the body was a good save. We'll see if we finally have our goalie over the next few years. Our defense is dangerous but our front line is getting old and tends to disappear in the playoffs. We got the second pick a couple years ago but Nolan has had no luck with injuries and I wouldn't be surprised if he retires early because of concussions. Hockey's a tough and fickle sport.
Thanks. Peace.

(35,572 posts)I have a good friend who lives in Lancaster County and he tells me all the time about the Repukes around him. It's not that they're obnoxious law-breakers so much, they're just everywhere. Especially the Amish, they have all been crazy pro-Chumpers for the last 4 years. All clueless anti-maskers.
I'm wondering how the activity in Washington this week will affect these pro-Chump people. It's going to be interesting. I'm glad to see that some "moderates" are finally figuring out where their interests lie. There's nothing to be gained in supporting Chump, not after this week. None at all.
